The protesters and their critics do agree on one thing. With their weeks-long protests, Bulgarians have defied the old cliche – rooted in five centuries of Ottoman Turkish rule – that they are passive and fatalistic. “There is a vibe in these protests that is sincere and good for the country,” said lawyer Hadjova.
